What are Drainage Board and Drainage Geonet?

Drainage is an important part of many construction, environmental, and geotechnical projects. When groundwater, rainwater, or other liquids cannot be discharged effectively, excess water pressure may build up and affect surrounding structures, soil stability, waterproofing systems, and long-term project performance.

 

Drainage boards and drainage geonets are both geosynthetic materials developed to provide controlled pathways for water. However, they use different structural designs and are better suited to different engineering conditions.

 

A drainage board is generally manufactured from a polymer sheet with a three-dimensional dimpled, studded, or profiled structure. When installed against a wall, foundation, roof, or other surface, the raised structure creates a drainage cavity. Water can enter this space and flow toward a designated drainage outlet. Depending on the product design, the drainage board can also help protect the waterproofing layer from surrounding soil or other external materials.

 

A drainage geonet is usually made from polymer ribs arranged in an interconnected three-dimensional network. The spaces between the ribs create continuous channels that allow water to move within the plane of the material

 

This structural difference is important because drainage requirements vary from project to project. A drainage board is often selected when the project requires a defined drainage cavity together with protection of an adjacent layer, while a drainage geonet is commonly considered when the project requires continuous in-plane drainage over a larger area or longer drainage path.

Drainage Performance: What Should You Consider?

Choosing a drainage material based only on thickness is not enough. A reliable drainage system must maintain adequate water flow under the actual conditions of the project.

The first consideration is how much water the drainage layer needs to convey.

The structure of a drainage board determines the available drainage cavity, while the rib structure of a drainage geonet determines the available flow channels.

The required drainage capacity should be evaluated according to the expected water volume and project design rather than simply comparing nominal thickness.

 

Transmissivity

For geosynthetic drainage materials, transmissivity is an important performance parameter. It describes the ability of a material to transmit water within its plane.

This becomes particularly important for projects requiring water to travel over a relatively long distance.

 

Compressive Performance

Drainage materials can be compressed by soil, concrete, waste, or other structural loads.

If the drainage channels are significantly compressed, the available flow space may decrease.

Therefore, projects with high loading conditions should consider drainage performance under compression rather than relying only on performance under no-load conditions.

 

Drainage Distance

A localized drainage system and a large-area drainage system have different requirements.

For example, drainage around a basement wall may require a relatively short and clearly defined drainage path.

A landfill drainage system may require water or leachate to travel through a larger drainage layer toward a collection system.

This difference can influence the choice between a drainage board and a drainage geonet.

 

Can Drainage Board and Drainage Geonet be Combined with Geotextile?

In many projects, drainage alone is not enough. When a drainage layer is placed directly against soil, fine particles may enter the drainage channels and gradually reduce their efficiency.

This is why geotextile is often incorporated into the drainage system.

A nonwoven geotextile can act as a filter layer. It allows water to pass through while helping retain soil particles.

A drainage board or drainage geonet can then provide the main water conveyance pathway.

 

The basic principle can be summarized as:

Geotextile → Filtration

Drainage Core → Water Conveyance

 

This creates a combined filtration and drainage system.

Drainage boards can be laminated with geotextile to create composite drainage products, while drainage geonets can also be combined with geotextile for applications requiring both filtration and planar drainage.

The appropriate geotextile should be selected according to soil conditions, particle size distribution, permeability requirements, and clogging resistance.

 

A Practical Comparison: Drainage Geonet vs. Drainage Board

Consider two projects that both require effective drainage: a basement foundation system and a landfill leachate collection system.

At first glance, both projects simply need to “drain water.” However, their actual drainage requirements are very different.

For a basement foundation, the drainage layer is installed directly against the building structure. The main objective is to create a defined space for groundwater to flow downward while helping protect the waterproofing membrane from soil pressure and mechanical damage.

In this situation, a drainage board can be a practical choice. Its three-dimensional dimpled or studded structure creates a continuous drainage cavity between the wall and the surrounding soil. Water can enter the cavity and flow toward the drainage outlet, while the structured sheet can also provide an additional protective layer for the waterproofing system.

 

A landfill leachate collection system, however, has a very different requirement.

The drainage layer may cover a large area and needs to continuously convey leachate toward collection pipes. More importantly, the drainage layer can be subjected to significant pressure from the waste placed above it.

For this application, a drainage geonet may be more suitable. Its interconnected polymer ribs form continuous in-plane drainage channels, allowing leachate to move across the liner system toward the collection points. When combined with an appropriate geotextile filter, the system can also help prevent fine particles from entering the drainage channels.

 

Which One is Right for Your Project?

There is no universal answer to whether a drainage board or drainage geonet is better. The correct choice depends on the drainage function required by the project.

 

Choose a Drainage Board When:

* You need a defined three-dimensional drainage cavity.

* The material will be installed around basement walls or foundations.

* Protection of a waterproofing membrane is an important requirement.

* The project is a green roof or similar building application.

* The drainage path is relatively localized.

* Installation conditions favor a structured drainage sheet.

 

Consider a Drainage Geonet When:

* Continuous in-plane drainage is required.

* Water needs to travel over a relatively long drainage distance.

* The project involves large-scale geotechnical drainage.

* The system is designed for landfill drainage or leachate collection.

* The drainage layer will be subjected to significant loading.

* Transmissivity under load is a key design consideration.

 

When Both Filtration and Drainage Are Required

If the drainage layer is installed directly against soil, a composite drainage system combining geotextile + drainage core may be more appropriate.

The final material selection should be based on engineering calculations and product specifications, including drainage capacity, transmissivity, compressive resistance, chemical compatibility, and long-term performance.

The goal is not to find the material with the lowest price or the largest thickness, but to select a drainage material that can reliably perform its intended function throughout the service life of the project.
